Electricity

To improve the energy efficiency of its refineries and industrial plants, CEPSA has seven cogeneration plants, whose utilization rate averages 92%. A new cogeneration plant came on stream in 2010 at the La Rábida refinery, with an installed capacity of 50.5 MW and a steam production capacity of 142 tm/h. A new cogeneration plant is expected to come into operation around the middle of 2011 in Lubrisur, which will have a steam production capacity of 70 tm/h.

Combined Cycle

CEPSA has a 50% stake in the combined cycle plant, Nueva Generadora del Sur (NGS), which sells all its steam production to the Gibraltar–San Roque refinery.

Representation of Special Regime facilities

DETISA, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CEPSA, is responsible for managing the energy produced at CEPSA combined heat and power (CHP) plants on the wholesale electricity market. As well as managing the CEPSA combined heat and power plants, on behalf of third parties DETISA also represents an extensive portfolio of power plants covered by the special regime (1,500MW) using thermal, wind, hydraulic and solar technology.

In order to provide technical and economic monitoring of these plants, DETISA has developed a customer web which facilitates daily monitoring, using reports, of the energy measured, market settlements, market prices, and the premiums and allowances applicable to each special regime facility in accordance with the technology employed there.

DETISA has a management system that has been certified as compliant with the ISO 9001:2000 by SGS ICS

Electricity trading

DETISA is authorised by the Ministry of Industry to trade electricity to end consumers of the Spanish peninsula, the Canary Islands and the Balearic Isles. The customer portfolio is made up of industrial facilities from all sectors, office buildings and corporate consumers from the tertiary sector.

At the request of the end customer, DETISA draws up supply schemes that adapt to the needs of each type of consumption, including price hedges, supply at fixed prices and at prices that are pegged or indexed to the wholesale market price managed by OMEL.

Special Regime Despacho Delegado [legal entity created by the Spanish Government]

Every 12 seconds, the production Control Centre or Despacho Delegado of DETISA sends the REE (Red Eléctrica de España , the Spanish national arid) a snapshot measurement of energy generated by the power plants affiliated to this body. The Spanish national grid electricity control centre (CECOEL - Centro de Control Eléctrico de Red Eléctrica) captures all of the measurements from facilities of more than 10MW and sends operating instructions for the production and transportation system in order to guarantee the security and quality of the electricity supply.

The dispatch of power generated by producers affiliated to the DETISA Centre enables REE to control international exchanges and production, thereby dealing with possible variations in demand and any temporary production downtime affecting the domestic system.

Nueva Generadora del Sur

NGS, a 50/50 venture between CEPSA and Unión Fenosa, operates a natural gas-fired combined cycle power plant located on property belonging to the "Gibraltar-San Roque" Refinery. This plant sells all of its steam production to the Gibraltar-San Roque Refinery, and from an environmental standpoint, contributes towards sharply reducing CEPSA´s nitrous oxide (NOx) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions.
