Cogeneration (CHP)

In order to enhance energy efficiency at its refineries and production sites, CEPSA has five cogeneration (also known as combined heat and power or CHP) facilities to simultaneously produce electricity and steam. The annual average use of these facilities reaches more than 80%. In order to meet new steam consumption needs at CEPSA’s facilities, two new cogeneration plants are in the process of being built, one unit at the "La Rábida" Refinery, and another plant at ASESA (Asphalt refinery, 50% CEPSA).

NGS, a 50/50 venture between CEPSA and Unión Fenosa, operates a natural gas-fired combined cycle power plant located on property belonging to the "Gibraltar-San Roque" Refinery. This plant sells all of its steam production to the Gibraltar-San Roque Refinery, and from an environmental standpoint, contributes towards sharply reducing CEPSA’s nitrous oxide (NOx) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions.
