- More than 1,500 tons of Cepsa bitumen will be used in asphalting at the airport
Cepsa is taking part in the resurfacing of the runway at Tenerife Sur airport, as it supplies the bitumen used - specifically polymer-modified bitumen - for the runway surface. In total, Cepsa will provide over 1,500 tons of this product, manufactured in-house and with the trade name “Elaster Canarias”.
It is a state-of-the-art bitumen, developed by the company in its Research Center, with an improved formula adapted to the needs of maritime transport to Cepsa's facilities in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. After being received and stored at the Tenerife Refinery, it is transported to the Tenerife Sur Airport in heat-insulated 25-ton capacity tanks.
It is a high quality product which meets all the requirements demanded by AENA, and is manufactured using an environmentally friendly special formula that reduces CO2 emissions in the manufacture of the asphalt mix.
The polymer in this bitumen means that the agglomerate manufactured with it has greater elastic resilience to better withstand traffic loads, making the paving more durable. The work, which is scheduled for completion at the end of June, is being carried out by the joint venture formed by the companies Obrascon, Huarte and Laín (OHL) and Ten-Asfaltos.
Polymer-modified bitumen is used in special high performance works such as motorway tracks, airports, etc., and has already been used in large infrastructures on the Iberian Peninsula. It has a high elasticity, very high storage stability, excellent handling, great resistance to aging and excellent performance at high and low temperatures, making it very versatile in the ways in which it can be applied.
The Company continues to respond to the demand of the Canary Islands market, maintaining its steadfast commitment to the Islands. Cepsa has been developing, manufacturing and marketing asphalt products since 1957, with the most demanding Safety, Quality and Environmental care requirements, both in the field of construction (roads, paving, civil works) and in the industrial field (waterproofing and soundproofing in the automotive sector, paint manufacture, etc.).
