Digital Windfarm: Technology that optimizes wind power production

At Cepsa, we are constantly adapting to the latest energy market trends. In 2019, we took our first foray into wind energy with the Alijar II wind farm in Jerez (Cádiz).


In order to continue moving forward in the company's digital transformation and to continue adapting to the challenges of the energy transition, we have created a product that uses virtual reality and machine learning to get the most out of our wind farm's data. This product is Digital Windfarm.


WHAT IS DIGITAL WINDFARM?

The project consists of two phases. In the first phase, we built a 3D virtual reality model that shows—in real time—the wind farm and some of its many variables, such as wind speed, the position of each wind turbine, rotations per minute and the energy output of each wind turbine and of the wind farm as a whole. 


In the second phase, we apply machine learning to all available data (sensor data from each wind turbine, sensor data from each met mast, sensor data from each of the park's substations) to extract value, predict, study, compare and verify the workings and behavior of each wind turbine, thereby maximizing the output of the park and optimizing the efficiency of each turbine.
